Description

What are children learning in our schools today, and how are they learning it? Is what they are learning relevant to their needs, the needs of our society, and to the needs of the larger global society of which we are a part? What are these needs at this point in history? Is the way children are expected to learn really effective? What is our concept of learning? By not asking these questions we are driving our educational system - and our society - into ever-deepening crisis. Our efforts at fine-tuning the present system are ineffective and are creating still more problems. We need to go back to square one and then create an alternative system. The author suggests, in concrete detail, how this can be done.

M. G. Jackson has been with the Uttarakhand Environmental Education Centre, Almora for the past 25 years, involved in the creation and testing of a unique school course of local life and livelihoods, Our Land Our Life. In 2002 the Uttarakhand Department of Education integrated this course into the state school curriculum. Many years of pondering the significance of this course for school education in general has lead to the writing of this book.
