Description

Pandit Ramprasd Bismil and Ashfaqullah Khan are the two fiery revolutionaries who laid down their lives during Indian Freedom Struggle. Born in Shajahanpur in Uttar Pradesh, both of them went to the same school there - Abbie Rich Mission High School. Right from their childhood they harboured rebellious feelings against the oppressive British rule and took part in the activities of Indian National congress during their school days. When Mahathma Gandhi halted Non Cooperation Movement after chouri-Choura incident in which a police station was set on fire by enraged activists, Bismil and Ashfaq resented Gandhiji’s action and chose the path of armed struggle. Bismil and Ashfaq joined Hindustan Republic Association and played a prominent part in all the actions executed by the revolutionary organisation.

The Kakori Train Incident executed by Hindustan Republic Association on 9 August 1925 shocked the British authorities. While Bismil led the action Ashfaq, among several others, played a key role in ii. After this incident the British government cracked down on the revolutionaries, arrested and put many of them on trial. At the end of the trial, the British court awarded death sentence to Sri Rajendra Lahari and Thakur Roshan Singh besides Bismil and Ashfaq.

Bismil was an active member of Arya Samj where as Ashfaq was a pious Muslim. The difference in their faiths did not obstruct the friendship between the two believers who dedicated their lives for the freedom of their motherland. The two young men who were ready to lay down their lives for each other were seen as epitomes of Hindu – Muslim unity and were considered role models for revolutionaries in those days. Ashfaq tried to save Bismil from death sentence by owning up total culpability of the crime in the Kakori Train Incident case. The friends gave a clarion call to the people of India to remain united for the liberation of motherland. Three days before they were to be hanged, these bosom friends gave an immortal call to Indians to move ahead unitedly transcending the barriers of religion, caste and region in the struggle to liberate their motherland and the two beloved sons of Mother India, Bismil and Ashfaq became martyrs on 19 December, 1927.

The disputes of intolerance raging in our country today and the atmosphere of conflict cropping up from these disputes are not at all good for us. In this backdrop the ill prospect of a Chasm developing between the two major social communities in our country which may lead to an undesirable situation looms large. The atmosphere of intolerance and hatred is not what the martyrs strove for. It is completely against the wishes of the revolutionaries who accepted the hangman’s noose like a garland of flowers in their endeavor to liberate their motherland and to ensure a bright future for it.

We have to free ourselves from this poisonous atmosphere. If we want to get rid of the social, economic and political maladies plaguing the nation, and stride in the direction of building a prosperous India, we need to remind ourselves of sacrifices made by the great revolutionaries of those days and the ideals they lived for. We need to stand united in tune with the wishes of the great souls. We have to move ahead unitedly transcending the barriers of caste, religion, and region. We bring out this book BISMIL – ASHFAQ with the hope that it would be helpful in inspiring the people of this country to move ahead in this direction.
