On a mountain called grudhrakootam ,an old vulture by name jaradgavam was living on asoka tree. It had poor Eye-Sight and had lost its sharp claws. It was unable to hunt for its food. When birds in the tree used to give the food. The vulture was protecting the chicks, when the mother birds went out to bring food.

One day a cat by name dheergakarna came to eat the chicks. When the cat began to climb the tree, the chicks began to cry on seeing the cat. The vulture came out and shouted, “who is it that has came ?” the cat with the folded hands said . “please listen to my prayer. Iam living on the banks of the river ganga very near here.

I came to know that you always do justice, you are very compassionate and learned. I have come to just be in your company and learn a number of Good things from you !”

The vulture puffed up with ego and pride on hearing the price showed on it by the wily cat. It permitted the cat to live under the tree. When the vulture was a sleep and the mother birds were away, the cat used to climb up the tree and eat the chicks.

The birds thinking that the old vulture had itself killed and ate the chicks killed it. The vulture had to suffer because gave shelter to a stranger which was a wicked one.
