Description

Telugu: Peddinti Ashok Kumar

English: P. Jayalakshmi

A variety of emotions rankled in Imam’s breast. Why did Bibamma change now who could not bear to stay without Shadul? Why did Chand turn more important to her than Shadul? Why is Chand preparing to give up Shadul? Who has caused this fire to flare up in their midst? Why are their contended lives lying exposed to the world? Who has mixed poison in their life of milk-like purity? Can’t this terrible tragedy be avoided?

Friends Forever, a translation of Peddinti Ashok Kumar’s popular Telugu novel Jigiri, is a sad reflection on the capacity of man to dehumanize himself and about one of the disappearing ethnic communities coming under threat of its source of living, despite the best efforts of the government to rehabilitate them. There are boundaries to cross and political and cultural space to gain for Imam’s family to survive, or else, we are left with only a dimming memory of a marginalized culture. This novel has been translated into seven languages Hindi, Marathi, Punjabi, Bengali, Kannada and Gujarati including English.

P. Jayalakshmi, the translator, retired as Head and Associate Professor of Department of English, Osmania University, Nizam College, Hyderabad. Her translations include poetry, fiction and short stories of leading writers in Telugu such as Seela Subhadra Devi’s long poem Yuddham Oka Gunde Kotha as War, Heart’s Ravage (2003), in association with Bhargavi Rao, N. Gopi’s path-breaking Naneelu: The Little Ones (2007), Saleem’s Sahitya Academy winning novel Kaluthunna Poolathota translated as Silent Storm (2011), Annavaram Devender’s Telugu poetry Farmland Fragrance(2011) are some of her significant works among others.
