Telugu: Annavaram Devender

English: P. Jayalaksmi

Annavaram Devender’s poetry celebrates Telangana culture, its language and diction, and derides the politics surrounding it. Reading his poetry is a roller-coaster ride through the region’s history, culture and language that weathered many a political turmoil, in addition to facing the threat of growing industrialization and globalization that denied to its people rural flavor of freedom and enjoyment of their right over land. The smell of the soil, plough, bulls, supply of spurious seeds, and rains, failed crops, and ensuing famine, hunger and poverty, traditional crafts of weaving and carpentry having no market, farmer suicides, besides collapse of traditional social structures all fall within the ambit of his poetry.

Annavaram Devender, noted poet, short story writer, essayist and literary critic in Telugu was born in Potharam (S) village in Husnabad mandal of Karimnagar district of Andhra Pradesh. He has several anthologies of poetry to his credit such as Thovva (2001), Nadaka (2033), Mankamma Thota Labour Adda (2005), Budda Parkalu (2006), Boddu Malle Chettu (2008) and Maro Konam (2002). His is the recipient of Mahatma Jyothi Bha Phule Fellowship, Ranjani Kundurthi Award, Government of A. P. Vyaya Ugadi Puraskar, Doctor Malayasri Literary Award, Rangineni Yellamma Literary Puraskar and Marasam-Rudra Ravi Memorial Poetry Purskar.
